It is the product of an international team of amateur developers, and is available free of charge under the Creative Commons BY-NC-ND License. Katawa Shoujo contains adult material, and was created using the Ren'Py scripting system. By skipping most of Act 1 (the only things I dont skip in Act 1 is the new dialogue you get by choosing different options), both of theirs took me around 2 hours. The game uses a traditional text and sprite-based visual novel model with an ADV text box. Lillys took me just over 4 hours since hers was my first Ive done Emis and Hanakos since then. The story is told through the perspective of the main character, using a first person narrative. There are five main paths corresponding to the 5 main female characters, each path following the storyline pertaining to that character. Despite his difficulties, Hisao is able to find friends-and perhaps love, if he plays his cards right. Hisao Nakai, a normal boy living a normal life, has his life turned upside down when a congenital heart defect forces him to move to a new school after a long hospitalization. If your wants are more lax than that, I imagine most of the suggestions in the comments will be good enough for you.About Katawa Shoujo Katawa Shoujo is a bishoujo-style visual novel set in the fictional Yamaku High School for disabled children, located somewhere in modern Japan. That's going with the strict end of each side of the spectrum, from my perspective. That said, it's a fun VN that tilts towards comedy more than anything, so no heart rending stories. It branches off to a character route within the first 30 minutes-ish and the route events have absolutely zero relation to each other. ( ) The "common route" for this VN goes by so fast that you'll forget that it even exists. If you're specifically looking for something with literally no common route aspect, go with Making Lovers. It does have a common route/theme though. ( ) I got stronger Katawa Shoujo vibes from some of the routes of that VN than I have from any other. If you want a game with great character writing, where the vibe/mood of the routes change drastically between each one, try a VN named KoiChoco. So let me tackle this in two ways with two different recommendations: None of these commercial Japanese VN's are going to relate. Each route had different writers, and it was a volunteer project with no pressure from anyone higher up to keep the events similar to save on money. I'm going to start this by saying there's nothing like Katawa Shoujo, not really.
